From Homeless to a Master’s Degree

Through hardship, homelessness, and healing, Dominique discovered a future he once thought was out of reach. Read more of his story below.

My name is Dominique Jones, and at 40 years old, I see my life as a "two steps forward, one step back" kind of journey, but also one filled with purpose, grit, and grace.

For years, I battled kidney failure, tethered to dialysis treatments that left me exhausted.

In 2011, I received a kidney transplant; an incredible gift that gave me a second chance. But with that gift came a lifelong dependency on anti-rejection medication. Three years later, everything unraveled. I lost my job, my income, and the ability to pay for my medication. My body rejected the transplant, and I was thrust back into dialysis. I was physically drained, emotionally worn down, and soon found myself without a home, sleeping on the streets.

That season was one of the darkest in my life. But even in the shadows, something inside me refused to give up. I knew I was meant for more...I just didn’t know how to get there.

That’s when God led me to Cornerstone Assistance Network. Through Philip Posey and the New Life Center, I found a lifeline. He saw potential in me when I had almost forgotten it existed. The Cornerstone community met me with consistent encouragement and accountability. They gave me room to heal and space to dream again.

With their support, I enrolled at Tarleton State University where I earned my bachelor’s degree. Then I took a leap of faith and pursued my Master’s in Social Work where I realized I could take all the pain, setbacks, and lessons from my life and use them to serve others. I learned I could be a light for people walking through what I’ve survived.

In December 2024, I graduated with my master’s degree. It was one of the proudest moments of my life. My Cornerstone community even gave me my own graduation party to help celebrate this accomplishment. More recently, I have obtained my MSW license and am working toward getting back on the transplant list. I’m not just surviving anymore; I’m building a future.

There are so many others like me, facing setbacks but longing for a chance to move forward.

Will you help make that possible?
